Creating a Healthy Nursery: The Basics

One of the most important aspects of creating a healthy environment for a newborn is to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals as much as possible.

• If you are pregnant, do not paint the room yourself. Have someone else handle the project. Be sure to paint with one of the new water-based low-volatile organic compound paints. Painting should be done at least a month before the baby is due to allow ample time for VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) to evaporate or even better use non VOC paints (they are becoming much more common and readily available - I used Sherman Williams paint (was close to me) but there are others.
• Avoid using new carpeting which tends to have extremely high levels of VOCs. Better to just leave whatever flooring is already there. If you have to put down new flooring, consider natural linoleum or other low toxidity alternatives.
• The crib is your baby’s "nest" so it needs to be as pure as possible in every aspect. Choose a real wood crib with non-toxic finishes. The mattress and linens in particular need to be exceptionally pure and organic as these are the items your baby is nesting in.
• Most infant toys these days are made from plastics. Plastic is a major contributor to indoor air pollution. Look for natural organic cloth or wood toys.
• Fresh clean air is essential. Be sure to provide good ventilation into the nursery, but at the same time be conscious of the quality of air entering the room (car exhaust, cigarette smoke, etc. is most detremental to their health). Consider a Hepa air purifier.
• Once you have a nontoxic nursery, keep it safe by using only natural and nontoxic cleaning products. Always be sure to use any cleaning products in moderation.

While it may not always be possible to determine which materials are used in nursery products, there is one tool you have that you can rely on to evaluate any product—your nose. If the smell bothers you or appears at all chemical laden, then chances are it's unhealthful or at very least unpleasant to your baby so it's best to find an alternative
